What is NEVI funding, and does my site qualify?

A simple overview of the federal NEVI program for highway fast charging, its main site rules and how to find NEVI-funded stations.

The short version

The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program was created by the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law with $5 billion for states to build fast charging, starting along designated highway corridors. Each state runs its own grant rounds, so the timing and details depend on where you are.

Common site rules

Federal minimum standards apply to NEVI-funded stations. Key ones for corridor sites include:

  • At least four fast-charging ports that can each deliver 150 kW at the same time.
  • Generally no more than 50 miles between stations along the corridor.
  • Generally within one mile of the highway exit.
  • Open to the public and kept running at least 97% of the time.

What that means for a site

Four 150 kW ports need about 600 kW of power, so grid capacity matters early. Locations next to designated corridors, with restrooms and food nearby, tend to be strongest.

Rules and funding status can change, so always check your state's transportation department before applying.
